How it works

Add chapters to your video description following this simple format. Our system reads them automatically and syncs your video with the matching assembly step.

1

Add chapters to your video description

In your YouTube video description, add timestamps with a description and a sync tag in parentheses at the end. Use this format:

00:00 - Materials overview (materials) 00:43 - Attach side panels (step 1) 01:16 - Insert dowels (step 2) 01:55 - Attach shelves (step 3) 02:40 - Secure with screws (step 4) 03:04 - Add back panel (step 5) ...

The parentheses tag at the end is what we use to sync. YouTube will still turn these into clickable chapters on your video timeline.

3

Your video goes live

Your video appears embedded in our guide, synced step-by-step. When a user navigates to Step 5, your video jumps to the matching chapter. When your video plays through Step 8, our guide follows along.

Fully automatic. No extra work for you.

Chapter format reference

The format is: TIME - DESCRIPTION (sync tag). The sync tag in parentheses is what we use to match your video to our steps.

Format

TIME - Any description you want (sync tag)

Recommended

00:00 - Materials overview (materials) 00:43 - Attach side panels (step 1) 01:16 - Insert dowels (step 2) 01:55 - Attach shelves (step 3)

Step as description

00:00 - Materials (materials) 00:43 - Step 1 (step 1) 01:16 - Step 2 (step 2) 01:55 - Step 3 (step 3)

Mixed content

00:00 - Unboxing (materials) 00:43 - First panel (step 1) 01:16 - Quick tip 01:55 - Second panel (step 2)

Key rules

  • The (sync tag) in parentheses is required for syncing — without it, the chapter is ignored
  • Use (step 1), (step 2), etc. to match assembly steps
  • Use (materials) for the materials/tools overview section
  • Chapters without a sync tag are fine — they just won't sync (e.g., intros, tips, outros)
  • Start with 00:00 — YouTube requires the first chapter to begin at zero
  • Each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long (YouTube requirement)
